Dickinson Campaign Launches Distinctive Ad
The ad features Dickinson's portrait photo beneath the caption, "Plays Well With Others." Under the photo is a brief description of her work — in cooperation with others of various political persuasions — as a lobbyist, activist, and community affairs manager. The piece bills her as the one mayoral candidate who gets along well with all the political figures a St. Paul mayor must deal with. The ad came out of a discussion between two writers involved in the communications end of Dickinson's campaign, one a former reporter and editor and the other — Dickinson's husband, Christopher Childs — an author and sometime designer. Childs and the campaign's new media liaison, Jay McManus, were talking about Dickinson's constructive interaction with St. Paul's city councilmembers on various issues — in contrast to the tone of much local and state politicking — when inspiration struck. "The slogan just popped into my head, and I stuck it into the middle of the conversation," Childs says. The product of that momentary inspiration has already been favorably reviewed by two local advertising professionals — both also knowledgeable about politics — who got an early look at the copy. Stacy Graiko of Fallon Brand Consulting commented that the ad "gives the reader an optimistic feeling about Elizabeth's candidacy," and that it "differentiates Elizabeth from the sea of sameness" of most political advertising. There was agreement from Jim Cousins, VP and Brand Strategy Director at Kruskopf Coontz — and one of the architects of an award-winning ad campaign in Minnesota's 2002 gubernatorial election — who felt that the piece "appears to capture the spirit of this campaign — light-hearted, but focused on real improvements to St. Paul's quality of life." In Cousins' opinion, the "message will tap into an underlying frustration people feel with the Democrats and Republicans putting their own party (and petty) interests above those of the actual citizens who vote for them to improve things." The ad will also appear later in August in other publications, possibly in tandem with another piece that is similarly structured but offers a different theme. In addition, it will be distributed electronically via the campaign's expanding e-mail list, and is available for downloading on the campaign web site at www.elizabethdickinson.org.
